Partners in Flight (PIF)
In 1990, Partners in Flight / Compañeros en Vuelo / Partenaires d'Envol was launched in the U.S in response to growing concerns about declines in the populations of Neotropical migrant songbirds. Since then the focus of PIF has expanded to include all landbirds , recognizing that most of these species of birds were not covered by existing conservation initiatives. Partners in Flight forms the landbird component of the North American Bird Conservation Initiative .
Partners in Flight is a coalition of countries, government agencies, conservation groups, First Nations, academic institutions, private businesses, and individual citizens who share a common vision: to maintain the health of bird populations and their habitats . The power of this initiative is the synergy created when diverse groups coordinate their actions towards a common vision.
Partners in Flight provides a mechanism to link monitoring, research, and conservation action in the ecological context of the birds. Although international in its scope, Partners in Flight advocates a grassroots approach where regions develop their own goals and strategies to keep common birds common.
Information on the status of North American landbirds can be found in the Partners in Flight Species Assessment Database maintained by Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory . A continental synthesis of priorities and objectives that will guide landbird conservation actions at national and international scales is provided by the Partners in Flight North American Landbird Conservation Plan.
