"Booster Shot" to Mother Nature Helps Create Wildlife Trees.Fungal Inoculation gets to the Heart of the Matter.
Mother Nature is impressive in many ways, but sometimes she works at a less than a speedy pace. So it is with the creation of wildlife trees which are standing trees (alive or dead) in a decaying state that provide valuable habitat for many species. In time, trees with hollow cavities can be especially valuable but the process for this to happen can often take well over 100 years.
Now the Fish & Wildlife Compensation Program (FWCP) is experimenting with a relatively new method in Canada to create wildlife trees in 10% of the time that Mother Nature might take. It consists of introducing a heart rot fungus into selected live trees.
